a5c7b9f00b To protect his brother-in-law from a drug lord, a former smuggler heads to Panama to score millions of dollars in counterfeit bills. In New Orleans, the former smuggler Chris Faraday has regenerated and raised a family of his own with his wife Kate and their two children. Chris works in installation of alarms and his father is locked in prison for smuggling. When his brother-in-law Andy dumps in the sea water 10 pounds of cocaine that he is smuggling for the drug lord Tim Briggs to escape from the custom officers, Chris is forced to pay Andy's debts to protect the youngster and his own family. Chris leaves his wife and children under the protection of his best friend Sebastian Abney and travels in a Container Carrier to Panama to bring counterfeit bills and raise the money to pay Briggs. But Briggs and his partner want to force Chris to smuggle drugs and will use his family to reach their objective. Meanwhile Chris is betrayed and gets in trouble in Panama. In the exclusively clichéd Contraband, ex-bad guy Mark Wahlberg plays Chris Farraday who helps his idiot brother-in-law out of a jam but gets himself and wifey into plenty himself.

Quite frankly, that's all I want to say about this mess of a movie. It was a gut wrenching experience to watch old burned out themes overlapping even older and tired themes repeatedly. Hell, they all-but start the movie in the standard crowded, obviously East-Coast bar where Chris professes the standard, retired "he ain't like that anymore" speech.

It didn't help the movie was filmed in the dark, for the most part, and the script all over the place. Throw in bad performances, ho-hum action segments and actors who just didn't care to be there.

This heist themed film is so far removed from entertainment that it should, in fact, be banned. It's light-years under Ocean's Eleven (pick one) and it's a chore to get to the inevitable, highly foreseen finale.

Seriously, there is barely a redeeming quality here and it should be skipped. Former contraband smuggler turned legit family man, Chris Farraday (Mark Wahlberg) finds himself back in the game after his brother-in-law gets in over his head with mobster Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi). Now Chris has two weeks to get the money that's owed to Tim or he'll kill his whole family in this remake of an Icelandic film.

If not for the star power involved, I strongly suspect we would be watching a straight-to- DVD type deal. Don't get me wrong, if it had gone that route it would be an upper echelon DTV movie, buta cinema released film it's just a tad too cliché and overtly familiar to be that memorable. It's stylized and entertaining enough, but there's not really any meat here. A decent popcorn flick no more, no less.

My Grade: C Contraband is a tidy little thriller that makes up in execution what it lacks in originality. When Giovanni Ribisi first auditioned for Contraband, it was for a different part. The director, Kormákur, suggested he read for Tim Briggs, the local thug who terrorizes the Farraday family. Kormákur says he was originally looking for the tough guy, but he felt that Ribisi brought something unexpected and more dangerous than a typical bully would.
